Pastor's Column
I
There is something inspiring about a new year. I love getting out the new calendars I’ve bought or received. There’s something about those fresh pages just waiting to be written upon. A new year is a new beginning. In baptism we get that new beginning every day. Every day is a new gift to be used in serving God and others. What will it bring? What opportunities will come my way? What blessings will I discover? What new experiences will enrich my life? How will I live out my life? How will I live out my discipleship in this new year?
Often, people will make New Year’s resolutions. That’s not a bad idea especially if we intend to work at keeping them. Especially if we ask God’s help to follow through. My prayer is that we as individuals and as a church will commit ourselves to a deeper life of discipleship. Living as Jesus would have us live is challenging.. It’s not about comfort and ease, but it leads to the abundant life Jesus wants for us.
What might that mean? What might it look like to live as a disciple of Jesus? First of all it means finding out what living like Jesus looks like. That means cracking open the covers of our Bibles more often. We need to show up to hear what Jesus asks of us and promises us. Try reading Eugene Peterson’s The Message for a fresh reading. This year I’m, going to use the book The Daily Message for my Devotions. In the translation of The Message it will take me through the Bible in a year.
Discipleship also means exploring the gifts God has given each of us. We All have spiritual gifts that we are meant to use. What are yours? How can you use them in new ways? Please let your light shine!
Jesus talked quite often about money. He knew that how we use our money says much about who our God really is. Everything we have is from God and God cares how we use it. Being more intentional about our stewardship of money is crucial to our discipleship.
Finally, though there are many other things involved in discipleship, how we love our neighbors is close to God’s heart. Do we pray regularly for those who are ill, or those in the service, or for our youth? How often do you think about someone in our church family that might need a visit or a friendly phone call or a card that says you’re thinking about them? Further afield, with our benevolence dollars we send missionaries across the seas and support campus ministries. We start new churches, we respond to disasters, we feed the hungry. Our hands and feet and wallets are those of Jesus in the world today.
Liturgy means the work of the people. We worship God with our daily lives in how we treat our families, our co-workers, in how courteously we drive, in how we respond to the needs around us, in how we care for the earth.
Jesus calls us to fuller, deeper, abundant life as we live as Jesus would have us live.
A blessed new you to you all.
